About Corporate Watch
Corporate Watch (CW) is a research and training organisation that helps people challenge corporate power. We are a small workers’ cooperative which has produced strategic “information for action” to help grassroots campaigns win victories since 1996. We aim to model the world we would like to see: we take no corporate funding, earn a flat rate of pay, and make decisions by consensus.
We investigate exploitative bosses, landlords and property developers, companies profiting from prisons, deportation flights, animal exploitation and more, as well as the mega-corporations devastating our planet and communities – and the wider systems of power and profit they work within. We provide dedicated research and training for grassroots campaigners.
We are structured as a workers’ co-operative.
About the role
The researcher will work as part of a small team to:
- Carry out research on companies on behalf of grassroots campaigns and community groups, which includes uncovering information on a company’s structure, history, accounts, and the impact of their work.
- Produce and contribute to accessible explainers, factsheets, and analysis on how aspects of capitalism work for a broad readership. Topics vary, but may include issues such as NHS privatisation, the UK border regime, how venture capital damages communities, or the key producers of surveillance technologies.
- Manage your own research projects, which includes developing timelines and supervising contributors.
- Co-deliver occasional workshops and presentations on our research findings and research techniques (negotiable).
- Proofread or edit fellow researchers’ articles.
- Carry out a share of administrative tasks associated with running a cooperative, such as collective strategising, project planning, recruitment, funding applications and monitoring reports.
We especially welcome applicants with either experience of reading company accounts or editorial work.
Note that as a workers’ cooperative, you will have a voice in the development of research projects and thematic areas according to your interests and expertise, within the bounds of our strategic and funding priorities.
Key skills, experience and qualities
Essential:
- Experience of carrying out political/community research (note: this does not have to have been in an academic context).
- Experience of writing compelling, accurate and accessible texts (e.g., articles, leaflets, reports), that show an ability to convey complex ideas in clear, logical, and non-academic English.
- Experience of using a range of investigative tools, e.g. freedom of information requests, databases, interviews, etc.
- A solid understanding of the impact of capitalism and corporate power.
- Ability to work within a small team as well as independently (e.g. being self-driven and using research skills to solve problems autonomously); and ability to work on more than one project at once, balancing several strands of responsibility.
- Open-mindedness, creativity, drive, and confidence in this field of work.
- Working knowledge of grassroots campaigns in the UK.
- A commitment to our objectives and principles as an anti-capitalist co-operative.
Desirable:
- Experience of reading – and ideally analysing – UK company accounts.
- Experience of editing texts for coherence, accuracy, language and grammar.
- Skills in using social media strategically for campaigns, and confidence in media-related skills.
- The ability to translate complex information into visual outputs (e.g. power mapping, infographics, explainers, factsheets).
- Experience of writing accessible texts on companies or markets.
- Experience writing funding applications.
- Experience of facilitating meetings, working with anti-oppressive practices and conflict resolution.
- Experience of working with grassroots groups to develop strategic research plans for successful campaigns.
